1. What is pure mineral makeup?
Mineral makeup is made up of a variety of the earth’s natural mineral elements such as Mica, titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, kaolin, ultramarine blue, tin oxide. These mineral particles are known to be large enough so that they cannot penetrate skin or clog up your pores.
A pure mineral makeup is combined with inorganic pigments to achieve the desired colour. For a mineral makeup to be pure it should not contain artificial colours, preservatives or fragrances that are mostly found in chemical based makeup.
2. Why is pure mineral makeup safe?
In general terms pure mineral makeup is free from talc, preservatives like paraben, chemical dye, bismuth oxycholoride and synthetic fragrances which have the reputation of being one of the main causes of irritant to sensitive skin.
3. Why aren't preservatives used in pure mineral based cosmetics?
Cosmetics made from pure minerals and inorganic pigments that exist in nature do not need preservatives. Bacterial and fungal growth do not occur in completely dry pure mineral based cosmetics. Therefore, pure mineral cosmetics can be used for long term, up to two years. Preservatives are used in cosmetics that are not completely dry. These are subject to bacterial and fungal growth. Unfortunately, preservatives can cause irritation, acne and infection to the skin. Preservatives are one of the main ingredients in most fragrances.
4. What are Nanos and why should we avoid them?
A nanoparticle is a piece of material so small that its size is measured in nanometers or billionths of a meter. A typical nanoparticle is approximately 1/50000 smaller than the diameter of a human hair. This size makes nanos unpredictable with non-toxic particles sometimes becoming toxic at such a small dimensions.
Early scientific studies show that when exposed to UV light nanoparticles used in cosmetics produce free radicals that damage the DNA and cells. If nanoparticles gain access to the bloodstream of a pregnant woman they could harm unborn babies. If make-up has nano-sized particles these particles are more easily absorbed into the body. Avoiding products with ingredients that have nano-sized particles is definitely a safer direction to take so be sure to look for products that do not use nano-particles. KIBI pure mineral makeup is Nano Free.
5. I have sensitive skin, what makeup do you recommend?
When making a decision on what products to put on your skin, always read the ingredients listing. If non-mineral ingredients such as vitamins, artificial fragrance and even some types of antioxidants are added to the makeup, it could very well penetrate into your skin and if your skin is sensitive to some of these, you may get a reaction.
6. What can fragrance in cosmetics do to the skin and health?
Fragrances are the most common cause of irritation to the skin. However, it is important to note that there are fragrances that can be completely natural. Nevertheless, be aware that most commercial cosmetic fragrances contain chemicals such as phthalates that are used to make the scent last longer. Phthalates are unnatural and unhealthy as it is known to sometimes accumulate in the body and breast milk. Fragrance formulas are also known to trigger asthma and headaches.
Just a word of caution: When you look for an unscented product check the ingredients and become informed about what’s in it as some may be labelled unscented but additional chemicals may be used to cover up the original fragrance. You will find that pure mineral based cosmetics do not use fragrances.
We recommend KIBI pure mineral makeup as they are not only NANO Free but also vegan friendly, have not been tested on animals and free from any artificial or synthetic particles that may cause irritation to the skin.
7. Does KIBI pure mineral makeup provide UVA-UVB protection?
Pure mineral based cosmetics use titanium dioxide as a natural sunscreen. Titanium dioxide acts as UVA-UVB protection reflecting light and protecting your skin in sunlight. Zinc is a natural anti-inflammatory agent. High quality mineral based cosmetics will stay on your skin when perspiring or moderate swimming. Natural mineral makeup has SPF (sun protection) properties and water proofing properties. Most mineral based cosmetics have about SPF 15 on average. KIBI mineral makeup has a very high SPF factor.
8. What is mica?
Micas are common rock-forming minerals. Mica is a generic name given to a group of complex hydrous aluminosilicate minerals that crystallise with a sheet or plate-like structure. It is a natural shimmer pigment from the mineral Muscovite Mica (potassium aluminium silicate).
Mica powder in cosmetics is used as a filler & texturiser for improved skin feel. It increases slip & aids skin adhesion. It also acts as a bulking agent in emulsions, reduces greasiness of oil-containing formulas, can replace talc as filler and has anti-caking properties (prevents clumping and clogging).
9. Do mineral based cosmetics heal the skin?
Pure mineral cosmetics use revitalizing minerals with healing properties that are excellent for skin conditions such as acne, rosacea and irritated skin. Acne and rosacea benefit from zinc oxide, known to promote healing to the skin and is a natural anti-inflammatory. Titanium dioxide and zinc have properties that retain natural moisture, keeping the skin healthy and hydrated. What’s more they allow the skin to breathe without clogging the pores.
10. In using mineral makeup, are pores able to breathe?
Finely crushed pure mineral makeup allows the skin to breathe. Pores do not become clogged from using lightweight minerals and non-organic pigments. With pure mineral makeup, sensitive skin conditions as acne, rosacea and dry skin are soothed and not irritated whereas non pure mineral makeup and the heavier types of foundation makeup can be absorbed into pores which can cause irritation, acne and infection. Pure mineral makeup doesn’t clog the skin and lasts all day.
